IA9100 Frequently Asked Questions

Short answers to the questions we hear most often. Dates are estimates; the International Aerospace Quality Group (IAQG) is the authority, and your certification body (CB) will confirm what applies to you.

What is IA9100?

IA9100 is the expected new identifier for the next revision of the aerospace quality management system standard currently known as AS9100. It builds on ISO 9001 and adds requirements specific to aviation, space and defence organizations.

Why is AS9100 being renamed?

The IAQG intends to present its quality standards as one international family under a common "IA" identifier, rather than as regional publications. The renaming coincides with a technical revision of the content.

When will IA9100 be published?

Current estimates point to publication in late 2026. This is provisional and may change; check IAQG communications for the latest status.

When do IA9100 audits start?

Certification bodies are expected to begin auditing to IA9100 from around 1 January 2027. Confirm the start date with your CB.

How long is the transition period?

The transition window is expected to run roughly through 2029. The IAQG sets the official deadline; your CB will explain how and when your certificate will be transitioned.

Is my AS9100D certificate still valid?

Yes, an AS9100D certificate remains valid for its stated period during the transition, subject to the IAQG's transition rules. Plan to transition before the final deadline set by the IAQG.

What about AS9110 and AS9120?

They are expected to follow the same pattern and become IA9110 (maintenance, repair and overhaul) and IA9120 (stockist distributors). See our IA9110 brief and IA9120 brief.

What are the main changes?

Expected themes include alignment with ISO 9001:2026, more explicit operational planning risks (such as FOD, measurement systems, information security and APQP), continued counterfeit parts prevention, and maturing expectations around product safety, human factors and culture. See IA9100 key changes.

How should we prepare?

Get the official standard when published, appoint a transition lead, brief leadership, run a gap assessment, implement and train, then conduct an internal audit and management review before your CB audit. See the transition guide.

Does Paradygm Consulting issue IA9100 certificates?

No. Paradygm Consulting is an independent consulting and auditing firm. Certificates are issued by accredited certification bodies. We help you prepare through gap assessments, implementation support, training and internal audit support. See certification path.

How long does a transition take?

It depends on size, number of sites and system maturity. Small single-site organizations may need a few months of part-time effort; larger groups may need a year or more. Starting with an early gap assessment is the best way to keep it manageable.
