Who this training is for
Purchasing, receiving, inspection, stores, quality and engineering staff — and anyone whose work can introduce counterfeit or suspect unapproved parts into aerospace product or the supply chain. Many organizations use a short counterfeit-parts awareness module as part of onboarding and refresher records for AS9100D programmes preparing for IA9100.

AS6174 awareness
What this module covers
Detection habits, sourcing risk and control practices drawn from AS6174 counterfeit parts prevention themes — so purchasing, receiving and quality staff know when to escalate.
In plain terms, a counterfeit part is one that has been misrepresented — copied, altered, re-marked or passed off as genuine without authority. A suspect part is one where there is reason to doubt its authenticity or approval status but this has not yet been confirmed. Both need controlled handling.
Counterfeit and suspect unapproved parts are a serious safety and business risk in aviation, space and defence. AS9100D made counterfeit parts prevention an explicit expectation, and it is expected to remain an important theme in IA9100, IA9110 and IA9120.
Why it matters
Wrong parts, real risk
A practical prevention programme usually combines preferred sourcing (original manufacturers and authorized distributors), purchase-order flow-down, receipt verification and traceability, quarantine of suspect material, reporting obligations, and awareness training so people escalate concerns without fear of blame.
Risk often rises when teams buy from unauthorized or unverified sources (especially for obsolete or hard-to-find items), when delivery pressure overrides source controls, when traceability or documentation is weak, or when returns, surplus and salvaged material re-enter the supply chain.
Awareness training does not replace your written procedures, but it helps purchasing, receiving and quality staff recognize warning signs and know when to escalate. Pair this free online module with your site-specific counterfeit-parts controls. For related aerospace QMS themes, see our counterfeit parts prevention guide and operational planning (clause 8.1).
