Foreign Object Debris FOD awareness logo

Foreign Object Debris (FOD) awareness for aerospace manufacturing, MRO and supply-chain teams. Watch the presentation, complete the quiz, and receive a FOD training certificate when you pass.

This module matches our client-resources FOD course. It is awareness training for your people — not a substitute for your site FOD programme, and it does not grant IA9100 or AS9100 certification.

Who this training is for

Shop-floor staff, supervisors, quality and EHS leads, and anyone whose work can introduce foreign objects into aerospace product, tooling or work areas. Many organizations use a short FOD awareness module as part of onboarding and annual refresher records for AS9100D programmes preparing for IA9100.

What Foreign Object Debris means in aerospace

Foreign Object Debris (FOD) is any loose object that does not belong in a product, assembly, tool, or work area — from metal chips, fasteners and wire strands to packaging, tools left behind, or personal items. In aerospace manufacturing and MRO, even a small piece of debris can damage engines, block lines, short electronics, or injure people. Foreign Object Damage is the harm that debris can cause when it is not found and removed in time.

Why it matters

Small debris, real damage

A practical FOD programme usually combines clear work-area rules (FOD control zones, clean-as-you-go habits), tool and hardware accountability (shadow boards, checklists, etched tools), and regular walkdowns so debris is found before product leaves the cell.

Machining, deburring, wire harness work and maintenance teardown are common sources of chips, cuttings and leftover hardware. Colour-coded tools and marked control areas help people see at a glance what belongs in a zone and what must be accounted for before the job is closed.

Awareness training does not replace your written procedures, but it helps every person on the floor understand why walkdowns, housekeeping and tool control matter — and what to do when they spot debris. Pair this free online module with your site-specific FOD instructions. For related aerospace QMS themes, see operational planning (clause 8.1) and our counterfeit parts guide.
