IA9100 and ISO 9001:2026: How They Fit Together

IA9100 is not a separate system from ISO 9001. Like AS9100D before it, the aerospace standard includes the ISO 9001 requirements as its base and adds requirements specific to aviation, space and defence. That means changes in ISO 9001 become part of your IA9100 transition too.

This page is Paradygm Consulting's commentary. Refer to the published ISO 9001 and IA9100 documents for the actual requirements, and to ISO and the IAQG for official timing.

The relationship in one picture

If you are certified to IA9100, you are meeting ISO 9001 requirements as part of that certification.

About the ISO 9001 revision

ISO 9001:2015 is being revised, with the new edition commonly referred to as ISO 9001:2026. Themes discussed during the revision include:

The structure of the standard (the familiar ten-clause layout) is expected to remain broadly the same, which helps organizations already operating to ISO 9001:2015 and AS9100D.

What this means for your transition

  1. Plan one transition, not two. Because IA9100 incorporates the ISO base, most aerospace organizations can address the ISO 9001 and aerospace changes together.
  2. Don't skip the ISO changes. Gap assessments sometimes focus only on aerospace additions; the base changes count too.
  3. Check integrated systems. If you also hold ISO 14001 or ISO 45001, common elements such as context, leadership, internal audit and management review may be affected by parallel revisions over time.
  4. Confirm certificate arrangements. Ask your CB whether your ISO 9001 certificate (if held separately) and your aerospace certificate will transition together. See certification path.
